Naginata is a martial art developed in Japan for wielding a long, halberd-like weapon (called the naginata).  It was essentially a sword’s blade attached to a long pole.  Though competitive modern naginata was developed in the Twentieth Century and is thus relatively new, it traces its forms, techniques, and etiquette to many individual traditional schools founded hundreds of years in the past.  While historically, the naginata in Japan has been considered a woman’s weapon, at least as many men as women now practice naginata in the United States.

The Rocky Mountain Naginata Federation, a regional affiliate of the United States Naginata Federation, is dedicated to promoting the practice and traditions of naginata in the central United States.  Our members have competed at both national and international tournaments.
